How to Tell If Your Roof Has Storm Damage (From the Ground)

By the time you see a stain on your ceiling, the damage underneath has usually been building for a while.

Catching it early does two things: it keeps a small problem from turning into a major repair, and — if the damage is storm-related — it gives you the best shot at filing a successful insurance claim while the cause is clear and recent. So a ten-minute walk around your house after a storm is genuinely worth it.

What You Can Check From the Ground

Grab your phone for photos and walk a slow loop around your house. Here's what to look for.

1. Shingles on the ground or in the gutters

This is the most obvious sign. After high winds, take a look around the perimeter of your house, in your yard, and near your downspouts. Finding shingle pieces, granules, or tabs on the ground means the wind lifted or tore shingles off your roof. Even one or two missing shingles leaves the underlayment exposed.

2. Dark spots or patches on the roof

Look up at the roof surface (from the ground, or with binoculars if you have them). Asphalt shingles are coated with protective granules. When hail hits or shingles age and get damaged, those granules wear away, leaving darker, bare-looking patches. A roof that suddenly looks blotchy or uneven in color after a hailstorm is a classic sign of impact damage.

3. Granules collecting in your gutters and downspouts

After a hailstorm especially, check the ground beneath your downspouts and, if you can see into them, your gutters. A buildup of sandy, gritty granules — like coarse black sand — means your shingles are shedding their protective coating. A little granule loss is normal over a roof's life; a sudden pile of it after a storm is not.

4. Damaged or bent flashing and vents

Flashing is the metal that seals around your chimney, vents, and where roof sections meet. From the ground, look for anything that appears bent, lifted, loose, or knocked out of place. Also check plumbing vents and any roof-mounted features — if they're crooked or dented, the storm hit hard enough to move them, and water can get in around them.

5. Dented gutters, downspouts, and other metal

Your roof isn't the only thing hail hits. Check your gutters, downspouts, metal fascia, and even your mailbox, car, or AC unit for dents. If hail was big enough to dent your gutters and your car, it was big enough to damage your shingles too. This is also useful evidence for an insurance claim.

6. Debris on the roof

Look for fallen branches, large limbs, or other debris sitting on the roof. Even if it hasn't punched through, the impact can crack or loosen shingles underneath, and the weight and trapped moisture can cause problems over time.

7. Sagging or visible dips

Step back and look at the overall lines of your roof. Any sagging, dipping, or waviness in the roofline can indicate the decking underneath has been compromised — by water, weight, or age. This one is more serious and worth having looked at promptly.

Signs to Check for Inside Your Home

Storm damage doesn't always show on the outside first. Inside, keep an eye out for:

• Water stains on ceilings or walls (yellowish-brown rings)
• Damp spots or drips in the attic, especially after rain
• Daylight visible through the roof boards in the attic
• Peeling paint or damp insulation near the roofline

If you can safely get into your attic with a flashlight after a storm, a quick look for wet spots or light coming through is one of the most useful checks you can do.

What to Do If You Spot Damage

If you find one or more of these warning signs, here's the smart order of operations:

1. Document everything. Take clear photos of anything that looks off — shingles on the ground, dented gutters, dark patches, interior stains. Note the date of the storm. This is valuable if you end up filing an insurance claim.

2. Don't climb up there. It's tempting to get a closer look, but wet, damaged roofs are genuinely dangerous, and walking on a compromised roof can make the damage worse. Leave the up-close inspection to someone with the right equipment and experience.

3. Get a professional inspection — before you file a claim. A qualified roofer can safely assess the full extent of the damage, tell you whether it's storm-related, and document it properly.
